HARRY S. TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP
2003-2004
COMPETITION
The Truman Scholarship Foundation awards $3,000 scholarships
for the senior year of undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies.
Scholars in J.D. programs are eligible to receive $13,500 for the second year
and $13,500 at the start of the third year’s second semester. Awards
are made as the result of a rigorous national competition.
To be eligible for nomination, a student must
· be a full-time junior in the 2003-2004 academic year;
· be a U.S. citizen;
· have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average;
· plan a career in government, uniformed services, public interest organizations, or public service oriented nonprofit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment;
· have a community service record and extracurricular activities;
· have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and potential.

national competition, but The University of Toledo may nominate four students. If you would like to be considered for
nomination by the University, please submit this cover sheet along with a
typed, one-paragraph response for each of the following items:
1.
What public
service and community activities have you been involved in?
2.
Describe an
example of your leadership. (One letter of reference must confirm this
experience.)
3.
Describe
your most satisfying public service activity.
and
4.
A draft of an 800 word essay that analyzes a significant public policy
issue or problem in your field of study. The analysis should be in the form of a
memo to the government official who has direct authority to resolve the
issue. You must define the issue,
describe the solution, identify obstacles, and recommend a course of action
citing supporting data. An example of a
successful policy proposal may be found at www.truman.gov.

and typed responses must be submitted by Tuesday, 11 November 2003, to Dr.

or to Prof. Walter Denk, SL 111 (419.530.6036). Questions about the competition may also be directed to either Professor
