BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP

2003-2004 COMPETITION

 

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards full scholarships covering tuition, fees, books, room and board up to a limit of $7,500 per year for one or two years. Awards are made as the result of a rigorous national competition. To be eligible for nomination, a student must

 

·         be a full-time sophomore or junior in the 2003-2004 academic year;

·         be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or resident alien with intent to become a citizen;

·         have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average;

·         be planning a research career in mathematics, natural science, or engineering, which can make a significant contribution to his or her field.

 

Additional information may be found at www.act.org/goldwater.  Students may not apply directly to the national competition, but The University of Toledo may nominate four students. If you would like to be considered for nomination by the University, please submit this cover sheet along with a typed, one-paragraph response for each of the following items:

 

1.       What are your professional aspirations? Indicate in which area(s) of mathematics, science, or engineering you are considering making your career and specify how your current academic program and your overall educational plans will assist you in achieving this goal.

2.       Describe an activity or experience that has been important in clarifying or strengthening your motivation for a career in science, mathematics. or engineering

and

3.   A draft of a 600 word essay that addresses a significant issue or problem in your field of study. The essay should include: a description of the issue or problem, a research idea that would have a significant impact on the issue or problem, your involvement with the research project, and the relevance of the issue or problem to you as a mathematician or scientist.

 

This cover sheet and typed responses must be submitted by Friday, 7 November 2003, to Dr. David Hoch, UT's faculty representative, Honors Program, SL 102 (419.530.6030) or to Prof. Walter Denk,
